RDLR Architects Celebrates Groundbreaking for The Harris Center Northeast Clinic Replacement

RDLR Architects is proud to announce the groundbreaking of a new Northeast Clinic for The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD, marking an important step forward in expanding access to behavioral health services for communities across Northeast Houston.

The project replaces the existing Northeast Community Clinic located at 7200 North Loop East Freeway, which has long faced operational challenges including flooding risks, limited square footage, and an outdated layout that disrupts patient flow and increases wait times. The current facility also lacks adequate privacy and relies on a single entrance, creating additional challenges for both patients and staff.

The new 40,000-square-foot, one-story clinic, located on an 11.37-acre site along East Little York Road, is designed with a strong emphasis on client-centered care, accessibility, and wellness. The facility will integrate physical health services, mental health services, a pharmacy, and essential support programs into a cohesive environment that supports whole-person care.

The campus will include dedicated clinic spaces for children, youth, and adults, as well as a wellness center, playground, pharmacy, and detention pond, with additional space reserved for future expansion as community needs grow.

A defining feature of the project is its connection to nature. The wooded site will retain many of its existing trees, creating a natural healing environment for patients and staff. The design incorporates biophilic principles, bringing natural light, greenery, and sensory-friendly elements into the clinic to promote calm, reduce stress, and improve the overall care experience.

The new facility also prioritizes efficient circulation and improved privacy, helping to streamline operations, reduce wait times, and provide a more comfortable and dignified experience for individuals receiving care.

Once complete, the Northeast Clinic will significantly expand capacity for behavioral health services in the Northeast quadrant of Houston, ensuring that residents have greater access to the resources and support they need.

RDLR Architects is honored to partner with The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD on this transformative project that reflects a shared commitment to community wellness, dignity in care, and resilient design.
