PROJECT DESCRIPTION
RDLR Architects, in collaboration with Concept Neighborhood, recently completed Slowpokes’ fifth Houston location at the prominent corner of Sampson and Canal in the East End. Set within a revitalized 20th-century filling station turned tire shop, the 2,600-square-foot café preserves the site’s historic character while reconfiguring its spaces into a vibrant community asset.

Slowpokes, known for its in-house roasted coffee, locally sourced craft beers, hand-selected wines, and artisanal menu, now offers breakfast, lunch, dinner, and happy hour in a warm, adaptable environment. The completed design balances historic preservation with modern aesthetics, featuring an inviting interior, welcoming patio, and a flexible performance space in the hidden Northeast corner lounge.

With a focus on community connection, the transformed space blends past and present, celebrating the East End’s industrial roots and multicultural heritage while establishing Slowpokes as a neighborhood landmark that fosters gathering, creativity, and everyday enjoyment.
