PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The University of Houston–Downtown (UHD) is undertaking a transformative campus improvement initiative that includes the design and construction of a new Welcome Center addition and the renovation of existing academic and administrative spaces within the One Main and Academic Buildings. The overall effort is aimed at creating a more welcoming, efficient, and student-focused campus environment that reflects UHD’s growing academic mission and commitment to accessibility and collaboration.

PGAL and RDLR Architects are collaborating to deliver this multi-phase project, splitting the architectural and interior design responsibilities. PGAL serves as the overall project manager and is leading the design and documentation of the Girard Street Welcome Center Addition and limited third-floor renovations, totaling approximately 34,500 square feet.

RDLR Architects is leading the interior renovation of approximately 109,000 square feet across the One Main Building (3rd, 5th, 8th, and 9th floors) and the 7th floor of the Academic Building. RDLR’s scope focuses on restack planning, space optimization, and interior design services that modernize learning and administrative environments while maintaining campus continuity during phased construction.

The design effort is being developed in two coordinated packages, allowing flexibility for cost evaluation and phased implementation by the Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR). RDLR’s design approach integrates schematic planning, test-fit layouts, furniture and finish concepts, and coordinated ceiling and lighting strategies that reinforce a cohesive visual identity across all renovated spaces.

Together, PGAL and RDLR are redefining the interior experience of UHD’s urban campus—creating adaptable, efficient, and inspiring spaces that foster academic success and strengthen connections between students, faculty, and the greater university community.
